From April to September, the chuck-will's-widow can be found throughout all of Florida. Most of these birds fly to the tropics for winter, but a few remain in southern Florida.

The chuck-will's-widow occurs in open woods and clearings, and is active mostly at night. The female lays her eggs on the ground, or on dead leaves.
