Eastern Towhee*

The eastern towhee is found year-round throughout mainland Florida in brushy areas, oak barrens (level land with little vegetation), and open woods. It does require some type of dense, bushy cover in its habitat.
The eastern towhee typically builds its nest in the ground or in low shrubs, and eats nuts, seeds, fruits, and some insects. This bird was once called the "rufous-sided towhee," but scientists have now split that classification into two distinct species - the eastern towhee found in the eastern U.S. and the spotted towhee found in the western U.S.
