The red-cockaded woodpecker is found throughout the southeastern United States and Florida, but only where its limited habitat exists. The red-cockaded woodpecker requires old-growth pine forests with open understory for its habitat. It prefers longleaf pines and living pines that are at least 85 years old.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service considers the red-cockaded woodpecker an endangered species in the Southeast. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has designated this woodpecker a threatened species in Florida.
