The Eastern indigo snake is the largest nonvenomous snake in North America, and can reach lengths of more than nine feet.

These snakes can be found in all parts of Florida, except the Florida Keys. They inhabit a wide variety of habitats, both wet and dry. In the panhandle, indigo snakes are often found in xeric sandhills. In east central Florida, indigo snakes occur frequently in cabbage palm hammocks. On the west central coast, they are often seen in hydric hardwood hammocks. All over the state, favorite habitats for indigo snakes are areas around ponds. These snakes are a threatened species.
