WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE FLORIDA YOUTH NATURALIST PROGRAM?

The Florida Youth Naturalist Program is a curriculum created to supplement students’ academic studies and get them involved in the science and appreciation of Florida ecosystems. The program consists of four chapters – Ecology in FloridaUpland EcosystemsFreshwater Ecosystems, and Coastal Ecosystems. Each ecosystem chapter consists of three lessons to teach students about the respective ecosystem’s 1) habitat, 2) wildlife, and 3) how humans are impacting the ecosystem. Students can expect to receive lessons from their instructor paired with interactive experiences including field trips, games, scavenger hunts, wildlife explorations, and more. All activities are followed by a reflection exercise and application questions.

WHO OFFERS THE COURSE?

The course can be given by anyone who owns a copy of our Field Guide. It is designed to be applicable to both formal and informal instruction structures. Meaning, it can be utilized by elementary/middle school teachers, but is also encouraged to be administered by parents with homeschooled children, after school clubs, summer camps, boy and girl scout troupes, nature centers, etc. We encourage anyone who wants to connect their children to their environment to either use our Field Guide to give the course themselves or locate an endorsed instructor in their area and enroll their child in their course.
