This pioneering species regularly appears in overgrown fields, along fence lines, and around wood lot edges. It is adapted to a variety of soils, and can withstand flooding and drought. However, this tree prefers moist, fertile soils. While it is found most often in central to midwestern U.S., it is distributed nationwide.
