    Strengthening Families Program

The Strengthening Families Program: for Parents and Youth 10-14 (SFP 10-14) is an evidence-based, skill-building curriculum that has been recognized by numerous federal agencies as an exemplary or model program. This evidence-based program is designed for parents/caregivers and their youth aged 10 to 14. Using highly-interactive sessions, families learn and grow together through role-playing, meaningful discussion, games, fun projects, and more.

The Strengthening Families Program aims to help all families learn skills and concepts that reduce risks, strengthen parenting approach, and build/promote positive family member interaction. Other goals of this program include:

    • preventing adolescent substance abuse
    • reducing youth aggression
    • helping youth navigate peer pressure and stressful situations
    • setting realistic and appropriate parental limits
    • showing affection/love and youth support

Studies have shown that embracing these skills can help reduce aggressive behavior, avoid depression, and increase academic achievement.

What are the benefits of SFP 10-14?

SFP 10-14 has been proven effective in the following areas:

    • delaying the onset of adolescent substance use
    • teaching youth skills for dealing with stress and peer pressure
    •  increasing the ability of parents/caregivers to set appropriate limits and show affection to and support of their children
    • helping parents/caregivers learn nurturing skills that support their children
    • giving youth a healthy future orientation and an increased appreciation of their parents/caregivers

    SFP in Florida

We have included over 30 families in our Strengthening Families 10-14 programming here in Florida so far! The sessions begin with a free dinner, followed by separate learning activities for the parent/caregiver and the child. The sessions end with a joint learning activity.

Families have loved this programming- One parent said, SFP "helped my kids open up to us more and create a stronger family unit."
