Identifying Characteristics
| Size/Form: | Strangler fig grows to be a large tree, 50' to 60' in height with a 2' to 4' diameter. It has a round, spreading crown. |
| Leaves: | The leaves are alternate, simple, evergreen, and oblong to elliptical in shape. The leaves are 2" to 5" long and 1" to 3" wide with a pointed tip and wedge-shaped base. The margins are entire. The thick, leathery leaves are yellow-green, lustrous above, and paler below. |
| Fruit: | The fruit is a yellow to reddish purple, fleshy, ½" long fig-like structure containing small drupelets. |
| Bark: | The smooth, ashy gray bark can become scaly on larger trunks and fall off to expose the black inner bark. |
| Habitat: | Strangler fig grows in the sandy soils of hammocks and coastal areas. |
