UF/IFAS Urban Forestry Extension Council
The UF/IFAS Urban Forestry Extension Council (UFEC) is a network of UF/IFAS Extension specialists, agents, and professional partners who collaborate to develop research, educational resources, and tools that support the health and growth of Florida’s urban forests, where many Floridians live, work, and play.
Our Mission:
The UF/IFAS Urban Forestry Extension Council (UFEC) facilitates the exchange of knowledge and best practices on urban and community forest management through science-based extension programming. By building partnerships and engaging communities, we enhance awareness of urban forestry’s benefits, support the expansion of urban canopies, and help maintain sustainable urban ecosystems in Florida.
Our Vision:
To encourage a healthy and sustainable urban forest across Florida that enhances the quality of life in communities by promoting education, advocacy, and best management practices. We envision a well-informed and engaged population—including tree care professionals, municipal departments, and residents—actively supporting the expansion of urban tree canopies and maximizing the ecosystem services that urban forests provide in Florida.

What is Urban Forestry?
Urban forestry involves the planning, care, maintenance, and protection of trees and other natural features in our suburbs, towns, and cities. The trees in our communities, like those in neighborhood parks, schoolyards, streets, public areas, and private properties, are important because they provide shade, help manage stormwater runoff and can reduce energy costs. The trees in our urban forests also enhance the beauty of our surroundings, making the places we live more pleasant and support our wellbeing.
