Florida PLT School Program

WHY BECOME A PLT SCHOOL?

PLT offers educators a way to connect students with their natural world, sparking interest and curiosity through cross-curricular activities. Research tells us that children do best when they are engaged in their learning through hands-on experiences. When children experience PLT activities that are incorporated regularly into classwork, they become actively engaged. PLT and environmental education in general encourages students to research, investigate how and why things happen, and make their own decisions about complex environmental issues. Through the PLT Schools Program, PLT activities are regularly incorporated into curriculum and a “PLT Week” makes for a robust learning experience for students.

Principals, PLT-trained educators or facilitators, or Steering Committee members can nominate schools at any time during the year using the Florida PLT School Application.

Requirements to become a Florida PLT school:

  • At least 50% of the teaching faculty from an elementary school or 50% of the teaching faculty at grade or subject level in a middle or high school have attended a Project Learning Tree professional development training. Pre-K PLT school applicants must have 50% of the educational staff PLT certified.
  • The principal has selected a PLT School Coordinator that acts as a liaison between the School and the PLT State Coordinator.

Once designated as a PLT School, Schools may choose one of the following:

  1. An officially designated PLT Week where at least 80% of the PLT-trained teachers conduct at least 5 PLT activities or
  2. 80% of the PLT-trained teachers conduct at least 5 PLT activities throughout the school year.

Ideally, a school would do both of the above, but the requirement is that one is fulfilled.

The School Coordinator is required to complete the Online Annual Report Form (PDF version also available).
