Coupled Natural-Human Dynamics of Stormwater Ponds

Stormwater wet ponds are ubiquitous features of residential developments. These ponds are designed to reduce urban runoff, provide flood prevention, and retain nutrients and other contaminants exported from residential areas prior to discharging into sensitive downstream water bodies. These ponds also serve as aesthetic amenities for community residents, leading to expectations for how ponds should be managed. As part of an interdisciplinary project, we will identify the interactions and tradeoffs between environmental and aesthetic functioning of stormwater ponds in residential communities.
